- It’s always interest-free when you pay it in 4 instalments. If you do miss a payment, you will incur a late fee and you won’t be able to pay with Afterpay until you settle your account.

The service allows you to split a purchase into four interest-free payments over six weeks, with the first 25% paid at the time of purchase and the remaining installments due every two weeks. However, if you miss a payment, Afterpay charges late fees. These late fees typically start at $10, with an additional $7 added if the payment remains unpaid after a week. Importantly, late fees are capped at 25% of the original purchase price or a maximum of $68, whichever is lower. Afterpay’s approach aims to encourage timely payments by limiting how much you can incur in late fees compared to credit card debt, which accumulates interest continuously
For larger purchases over $400, Afterpay offers a separate monthly payment plan with interest rates, which can range from 6.99% to as high as 35.99% APR, depending on the customer’s eligibility. This is only for high-value items and is a different structure from Afterpay’s usual “pay-in-four” plan
